Here I leave you a selection of eight gravel bikes that mount aluminum frames and that, as a common denominator, do not exceed 1,500 euros.

They are usually entry models to gravel or adventure cycling. Not for this reason, since they are somewhat economic options, they lack the necessary quality to practice these disciplines. Many of them will surprise you in terms of functionalities and quality of their components.

Surely, I have left many more models that you know, and that is why I encourage you to participate in the comments section to add your own options.

1. Merida Silex 300 / 1.399 €

Merida Silex 300 / 1.399 €

As a user of this bike I must add that it really is a different bike at the geometry level. In other words, its hydroformed aluminum frame is like the mountain bike models. Note that it has an aggressive sloping that aesthetically makes it different from some options that I will present later.

Next to the frame, it shows off a carbon fork with a straight cut and therefore very modern. As for the drivetrain, it mounts the Sram Apex 1 groupset of 11 speeds and single chainring. Disc brakes are mechanical, but acceptable in performance.

It has different eyelets for the installation of a third bottle cage or bikepacking solutions on the fork itself.

If we talk about tires, they are the Maxxis Rambler 700x38C as the Silex with the highest price and level.

Features:

– Aluminum frame.
– Carbon fork.
– Sram Apex 1 11-speed.
– Components of the own brand
– Maxxis Rambler 700x38C.

Price:

Its approximate price is € 1,399.

2. Marin Gestalt / 900 €

Marin Gestalt / 900 €

The Marin Gestalt is a model, unlike the first bicycle, 100% aluminum. That is, both the frame and the fork are made of alloy. In fact, there are very few bicycles that together assemble a solution with the same material. The fork is usually made of carbon.

Another thing that I should highlight about this model, which although it is an option that can be used for gravel, is a bicycle that is closer to the use of asphalt or on hard dirt tracks. In fact, it only allows us to install tires up to a width of 35c. Therefore, it is not the best option to cover difficult terrain due to this limitation, so be aware of this fact.

Regardless of the type of material chosen, the Gestalt mounts the Shimano Claris 8-speed groupset. The lowest level of this brand.

The components are obviously from the brand itself and the tires it mounts are the 32mm WTB Exposure.

Features:

– Aluminum frame.
– Aluminum fork.
– Shimano Claris 8-speed.
– Components of the own brand
– WTB Exposure 32mm tires.

Price:

Its approximate price is € 900

3. Megamo Jakar 30 / 1.199 €.

Megamo Jakar 30 / 1.199 €

The Megamo Jakar 30 presents the new Shimano GRX gravel-specific groupset. Specifically, the RX400 level which is the lowest set in the range.

The first thing I add about the Jakar is that it is a very modern frame. This has a simple explanation: its tubes have different thicknesses since they are hydroformed. The seatstays are short, making the whole of this triangle look very modern.

As for the components that come in the Jakar 30 (according to the manufacturer’s website), seatpost, handlebars, stem and saddle are from the brand itself. These components are made of aluminum and of acceptable quality. As for the handlebar, it is specific for gravel and has a slightly flared shape.

The tires it incorporates are the WTB Riddler for 700c wheels and with a thickness of 45mm. Such tires are suitable for off-road or gravel.

Features:

– Aluminum frame.
– Carbon fork.
– Shimano GRX 400 10-speed
– Components of the own brand
– 45mm WTB Riddler tires.

Price:

Its approximate price is € 1,199

4. Orbea Terra H40-D / 1.599 €

Orbea Terra H40-D / 1.599 €

The Spanish brand Orbea has attractive models in both carbon and aluminum. On this occasion, and although I know that it exceeds the price agreed in this article, I wanted to include it because I consider it interesting.

It has a frame with a smooth sloping that stands out for its hydroformed shapes.
Also, like the previous model they present the Shimano GRX groupset. The tier is the 10-speed RX400.

The components, as usual in these models, are made of aluminum and are provided by the brand itself. Highlight its specific gravel handlebar with a 12-degree flare.

The tires are the Kenda Alluvium K1226 for standard 700c x 40c wheels.

Features:

– Aluminum frame.
– Carbon fork.
– Shimano GRX 400 10-speed
– Components of the own brand
– Kenda Alluvium 40c tires.

Price:

Its approximate price is € 1,599.

5. Triban RC 520 Gravel 650b / 999 €

The Triban RC 520 Gravel 650b could not be missed due to its excellent level and its low price. It includes a groupset focused on gravel such as the 11-speed Sram Apex 1. It is a single chainring solution, with very correct operation and a level like the Shimano Tiagra.

Like most models of this level, it features an aluminum frame along with a carbon fork. I would highlight that the frame has a very modern appearance with a somewhat moderate sloping or drop of the upper tube and with short seatstays.

As for the tires, they are the WTB Resolute with a size of 650b and a width of 42c. It is also possible to locate 700c wheels if you prefer. In fact, there is this same model with this size of wheels and mounted with the Shimano 105 groupset.

Features

– Aluminum frame.
– Carbon fork.
– Sram Apex 1 11-speed.
– Standard components of the brand.
– WTB resolute 650b x 42c tires.

Price:

Its price is excellent considering its assembly: € 999.

6. Nukeproof Digger 275 Comp/ 1.499,99 €

Nukeproof Digger 275 Comp/ 1.499,99 €

Nukeproof Digger 275 Comp is also an interesting model for having a very current aluminum frame and carbon fork. It is also a hydroformed alloy like most frames featured in this review.

One of the things about this bike is that it mounts the RX 600 level of the Shimano GRX. Accordingly, a groupset at the Shimano 105 route level.

All the components, as is usual in these models of this type of level, are provided by the brand itself.

Finally, the tires are the WTB Sendero for a wheel size of 650b and a width of 47c.

Features

– Aluminum frame.
– Carbon fork.
– Shimano GRX 11-speed (RX 600).
– Standard components of the brand.
– WTB Sendero 650b x 47c tires.

Price:

You can find it on Wiggle for € 1,499.99.

7. Specialized Diverge E5 / 1.049,00 €

Specialized Diverge E5 / 1.049,00 €

The Specialized Diverge E5 is a gravel bike with an aluminum frame with hydroformed tubes or with different shapes. In addition, it incorporates a carbon fork with a straight design and therefore very modern.

This Diverge E5 has the Shimano Claris 8-speed groupset with a 46/34 tooth sub-compact chainring paired with an 11-34 cassette.

As for the components, including the tires are from the brand itself. The brakes, as usual at this price level, are mechanical and from the manufacturer Tektro; specifically, the Mira model.

Features

– Aluminum frame.
– Carbon fork.
– Shimano Claris 8-speed.
– Components of the own brand.

Price:

Its approximate price is € 1,049.00.

8. Octane One Gridd / 999,00 €

Octane One Gridd / 999,00 €

The Octane One Gridd is truly a “bargain” considering its characteristics. The frame is aluminum with a carbon fork. Both are quite modern: tubes with different thicknesses, tapered steerers, thru-axles and wheels with a certain high profile.

As for the groupset, it mounts the more than acceptable Sram Apex 1 single chainring and a cassette with 11-speed. At the level, you can compare it to a Shimano Tiagra.

All its components are manufactured by the brand itself. As for the tires, mount the Kenda Flintrige for wheels of 700c and with a thickness of 35c.

Features

– Aluminum frame.
– Carbon fork.
– Sram Apex 1 11-speed.
– Components of the own brand.

Price:

Its approximate price is € 999 and you can find it at Wiggle.

Conclusion

Well, as you can see there are many bicycles on the market that offer the combination of an aluminum frame and a carbon fork. These frames, unlike in the past, look much more modern thanks to the technique of hydroforming the tubes.

As a common denominator, they set up groupset of acceptable quality. Typically, Sram Apex 1 or the lower end of the new Shimano GRX.

Its components (handlebars, stem, seatpost and saddles) are normally provided by the brands themselves to reduce costs. They are components of acceptable quality and, over time, you can replace them with others of a higher level. Although I consider that it is not something essential in gravel.

Personally, I advise all these models to get started in gravel without spending a fortune.
